A VAM STUDIO Production

Jamila Woods has shared a video for a new song titled “Giovanni.” The video, which she co-directed with Vincent Martell, features her family. The track was inspired by poet and activist Nikki Giovanni and references her 1970s poem “Ego Tripping.” In a press release, Woods said, “‘Giovanni’ is a song about owning & celebrating all the parts of myself. It’s about legacy and lineage, and how the love & strength of the people who made me makes me feel invincible.” Watch the 9-minute “Giovanni” clip below (via The Poetry Foundation).

“Giovanni” follows Jamila Woods’ 2016 solo debut HEAVN, which featured Chance the Rapper, Saba, Kweku Collins, and others. Last year, she shared the video for “LSD” featuring Chance. Its treatment was created by Chicago high school then-senior Ashley Huicochea, who won Woods and Chance’s contest to make the visual.
